Why Likeable Leaders can be more effective?

If high performers think that Leadership is not about Likership.

Here is something interesting to know.

In 2007, a Lieutenant in Kuwait

saw a sign proclaiming, “We Need Leadership, Not Likership.”

And he headed his team, saying..

Leadership was not about being liked, but instead about earning the respect and trust of your followers. But I still thought there was a lot of value in being liked. Striving to achieve this leadership trinity was difficult without it”.

In 2018, Assistant Professor Mr Charn, in his second career in organisational behaviour, published a journal article in Applied Psychology about Likership in the workplace.

He did research with 29 different leadership theories, including “authentic,” “transformational,” “charismatic,” “ethical,” and “servant” Leadership.

His research says Likership is not opposite to Leadership. In fact, it has the key components of the Effective Leadership Formula. And there is no harm in being liked by team members or subordinates, it is a key to achieving higher outcomes.

What is more interesting is that Likeable Leadership is something that says you know your people, you can connect with them in a way that they feel heard and valued.

Here is the question for you..

What do you say?

What are your learnings?
